Nevada Courts Make Navigating Legal Processes Easier with One-Page Timelines

01 March, 2024

Nevada courts use printable process—one-page guides that provide clear, helpful instructions, making legal procedures easier to navigate for everyone.

CiviLaw.Tech has just completed a two-year journey with the Nevada Supreme Court, where our team developed several interactive self-help tools aimed at bridging the access to justice gap in Nevada's courts. During the discovery phase of this project, we surveyed advocates, court staff, attorneys, and judges in Nevada. The top issues reported by stakeholders were that self-help litigants need better access to information, access to forms, and transparency throughout the legal process. This feedback shaped the development of our self-help tools.

One of our key deliverables is what we call "process timelines": one-page PDF guides that visually outline the essential steps involved in various legal processes. These resources cover topics such as name changes, protection orders, divorce, custody, etc.—all designed to make the legal system more navigable for self-represented litigants. These timelines are available in print and downloadable online.

Printed materials with clear, helpful instructions remain crucial in courts and other public services, serving as an important supplement to interactive resources. The research underscores the importance of clear, accessible information in improving user comprehension and engagement. By utilizing every medium available—including printed guides alongside interactive tools—we ensure that even those without reliable internet access can benefit from these resources.

Nevada's Interactive Self-Help Portal is a comprehensive solution that includes explainer videos, a generative AI-powered chatbot, eligibility reviews, and guided interviews where users answer a few questions to generate court-ready forms—all live and accessible via Nevada’s statewide self-help portal. With more than 10,000 users engaging with these tools since their launch, it's clear that these resources are making a tangible difference.
